Mechanical Pencil

Pencil Sculpture Competition work in progress.

We have an amazing artist resource here in the Roaring Fork Valley, deep in the heart of the Colorado Rockies.  This Mecca is the Wyly Art Center. This is a soup to nuts arts organization with galleries, art classes, lectures, you name it, all based in the small town of Basalt.

One of the "call to action" events is a sculpture competition to have local artist pay tribute to a pencil...that is how I interpreted it.

So above is the foundation of my entry. It may be too literal but I like being overly literal, it's a gift. So I will be posting the progress and I always welcome your input.

I am feeling great about this sculpture honoring the pencil. The is not the base of course, the base will be a structure baried in the ground and the object will appear to be somewhat floating. Pretty sweet. Stay tuned

"The Bomb"… Sold!

I am very excited! "May Have Built The Bomb" Photo A/P edition sold and is ready for delivery.

This is one of my favorite tool detail photos that I've done. The image represents a very "old school" soldering iron in a very clean, white. almost sterile backdrop. This was intentional. What I wanted to bring forth was not only the simplicity of this tool, but to hopefully question its big picture effect.

Before the days of commercial industrial production, circuits and electronic boards were soldered and assembled by a technician's hand. Everything of an advanced technology, from a transistor radio, a toaster, even the atomic bomb was touched by someone's hand holding a tool. This thought intrigues me. When I was handling this tool, with its red and yellowish green lights and an archaic on/off switch that was gravity activated, it struck me that this simplistic implement may have had a hand in creating some of the world's most terrible innovations. Contrast and conflict came to mind.

Also, it is very important to me that I create and build the appropriate frame as well. I chose to weld a custom frame that speaks to the images that I have seen from Hiroshima, done in damaged steel, with the essence of the horrific black, white and silver hues of the photos back then. Not a direct imitation but more of an uncomfortable recognition.

Here is the work;

HAZMATTER

Here is a quick sample of a new series of work I'm calling "HAZmatters". I want to focus on the weird world of caution, hazards and industrial safety that in the big picture, will kill us anyway.

These safety warning signs when combined in a random order create an inordinate amount of horrible sounding plights.

Be sure to follow this blog for updates of recent projects and current shows.

Denver Santa Fe Studio Show

It was my first, First Friday studio show in the amazing Art District on Santa Fe in the big city of Denver, Colorado. With short notice and a ton to finish, I made it in good form.

There was an endless stream of people with an endless amount of love, more than 150 of them. Here are some photos for the night.
